Making A Non-Newtonian Substance

  • Making A Non-Newtonian Substance

Purpose: Our aim for this experiment is to see which state of matter oobleck is and to define the science
behind it.

Materials: Water, corn starch (or corn flour), bowl, spoon and a flat surface.

Steps:
  1. Pour the amount of corn starch you want into the bowl.
  2. Then obtain your water and put the water in the bowl.
  3. Get your spoon and start stirring up your mixture.
  4. You will start seeing the substance come together. As you start seeing the illusions, try getting the
perfect fusion.

Results: When we did the experiment, I saw the oobleck concluding together and clumping up to form.
It felt so weird because when I was holding the mixture tightly it was solid but when I let it go, it was
liquid. I was so surprised! The oobleck was so confusing and shocking.

Conclusion: Want to know the science behind all of this? The reason why this experiment worked is all
because of the two matters that are made out of particles, which are liquids and solids. In solids perspective,
the particles are very close to each other. The solid’s particles are very strong and their force is
unbreakable. But in liquids state, their particles are further apart from each other than solids particles,
due to the liquids weaker strength.

Blog Detective

Today in cyber smart, we had to pick someone from the class and find some stuff about them by researching them on their blog. I found out some stuff about Jane, like what she likes to do or who her friends are.

Public or Private

Have you ever posted something online that seemed a bit too personal? Well today in cybersmart, we listed some stuff, we want to share online and some stuff we want to keep private. I realized that I didn't want to post anything that gave out too much information about myself.

Unfortunately I didn't get them all correct. I got one wrong since I thought that it would be safe to put my sibling's name on my blog. I thought it would interesting to know who my siblings are but I guess I was wrong...

Cycle Of Making A Rainbow

  • Cycle Of Making A Rainbow

Purpose: Have you ever wondered how a rainbow is made? Well today I will tricking your mind by showing
you a way you could see a rainbow.

Materials: You will need a glass bowl, water, white paper, medium-sized mirror and a flashlight/torch.

Steps: 1. Firstly, fill the glass bowl with water almost till the top. 2.  Then  place your mirror at the bottom
of the bowl, but if your mirror is too big - try placing it diagonally. 3. Get your long, white paper and hold
it straightly. 4. When you have completed all of the steps right, you will see something spectacular.

Results: While we were doing the experiment, I saw the colours on the paper converting into different
shapes as I would move the light. Shadows of the swirling water started appearing on the sheet. But
before the colours were visible, it took some tries to make it come onto the paper. Sometimes it changes
colours when the lights moves around. Here’s a tip, try keeping the flashlight/torch and paper still for
the best effect.

Conclusion: Want to know how a rainbow is made? Well basically… the sun pushes the white light in
the water. Since white light  is made out of 7 colours/the colours of the rainbow, the light rays help bend the
colours. Which soon makes the colours split in opposite directions and travel at different speed by water.
Then the rainbow starts to reflect back.

Water Vs Flame

  • Water Vs Flame

Aim: We are trying to see what will happen when a lit candle is put underwater beneath a glass.

Materials: 1 tea-light candle, clear glass, lighter, water, clear/glass bowl and an adult.

Hypothesis: I thought that if you put the lit candle above the water, it will float. But when the fire is
put under the water, I thought that the flame will go out since water is a conductor of heat, so it could
possibly blow it out.

Steps:

  1. Grab your candle and get an adult to light up the candle.
  2. Then, get your clear bowl and fill it halfway with water
  3. After gently get your lit candle and slowly put it above the water until it starts to float.
  4. Next, take your cup and firmly push it down. But make the candle is inside it.

Results: When we did the experiment, I observed that when you put the cup down, the candle would
still be lit. The air floated up the cup and the cup started steaming up. I saw it evaporating and it took
approximately 7 seconds for the candle to run out of gas.

Conclusion: I have found out that the reason why the flame didn’t run out is because when you put the
cup down, the air pushes the water out of the cup. But after-about 7 seconds it would run out since the
cup would use all the oxygen in the cup and then there would be no more oxygen in there.

Manaiakalani Learner Questionnaire

This morning at cyber smart, we did the manaiakalani learner questionnaire. The trickiest question for me was "If my family likes me learning on my chrome-book?" This survey made me understand my experience with my chromebrook and how it helps with my learning. I really liked the question about "does my chromebook make me a better reader?" because I think that my chromebook makes me pursue my goal at being good at reading!
